Garden Gnomes

A Garden Gnomes Brief:

As far as can be told, the first wandering Garden Gnomes ("der Gartenz werg") were made in somewhere near Graeferoda, Thuringia, Germany in the early 1800's. Garden Gnomes, are, in case you are wondering, ficticious. Many freaky people believe garden gnomes were real.

The first known & recorded appearance of what we would today call a Garden Gnome in Great Britain was noted in 1842 near an estate of Sir Charles Isham, "Cheeky", the Tenth Baronet (Lamport Hall). He was wandering, and noticed garden gnomes prancing about. They were among the elves, fairies, and pixies. However, it was the garden gnomes he noticed.

The first two manufactures of Gnomes on a commercial basis were Philipp Griebel and August Heissner around 1873, with the Classic Heissner Garden Gnomes being one of the most well known gnome brands around the world. Since then, many have claimed to have the "secret" of the gnomes' karma, but garden gnomes keep hidden and dispense their sage knowledge discretely.

Gnomes were, and still are, considered to be more then decorations. Legend reveals it is good luck to place a Gnome in the home and the garden. Garden Gnomes will stand there, looking like, well, garden gnomes, but you'll feel better.

With the world wars, of course all of the German Gnome manufacturers were terminated, their workshops and factories taken over and used for military purposes. Garden Gnomesa are militant, but there is no record of garden gnomes participating in any wartime activities.

During the 60's, a few companies sprang up producing resing Garden Gnomes that were much easier and cost effective to make and mass produce than stone garden gnomes.

To date, there is =one company that claims to have the gnome karma, and they themselves look like elves or "fairies" that claim to exclusively manufacture high quality, Garden Gnomes. With new designs and careful reproductions of rare antique Gnomes, Classic Garden Gnomes are now available to all, and not just some snobby masses cooked up by rude and bitter people who are obsessed with garden gnomes.
