Where did Fountains Begin?

A water fountain is an architectural piece that pours water into a basin or jets it high into the air in order to supply drinking water, as well as for decorative purposes.

From the onset, outdoor fountains were soley meant to serve as functional elements. Water fountains were connected to a spring or aqueduct to supply potable water as well as bathing water for cities, townships and villages. Used until the 19th century, in order for fountains to flow or shoot up into the air, their origin of water such as reservoirs or aqueducts, had to be higher than the water fountain in order to benefit from the power of gravity. or-164__91429.jpg Acting as an element of decoration and celebration, fountains also generated clean, fresh drinking water. Bronze or stone masks of wildlife and heroes were frequently seen on Roman fountains. To depict the gardens of paradise, Muslim and Moorish garden planners of the Middle Ages introduced fountains to their designs. Fountains enjoyed a considerable role in the Gardens of Versailles, all part of French King Louis XIV’s desire to exert his power over nature. The Popes of the 17th and 18th centuries were glorified with baroque style fountains constructed to mark the place of entry of Roman aqueducts.

Since indoor plumbing became the standard of the day for fresh, drinking water, by the end of the 19th century urban fountains were no longer needed for this purpose and they became purely decorative. Amazing water effects and recycled water were made possible by replacing the force of gravity with mechanical pumps.

These days, fountains adorn public areas and are used to honor individuals or events and fill recreational and entertainment needs.

Pick from all Types of Outdoor Fountains

Have you ever thought about turning your garden into a haven of serenity? Integrating a fountain into your garden provides tranquility as well as a variety of beneficial effects that come with having a water feature.

Wall fountains are an excellent example of outdoor wall features. These types of water features make for a fantastic addition to your yard even if it is small. Spouting fountains normally make quite an impact whereas wall features are more of a subtle kind of water feature. In this simple process. the water which is pushed out of a small opening, streams down a beautifully textured wall and is then collected at the bottom before being pushed back to the top.

Your garden’s style determines whether a themed fountain is right for you. In a rustic themed cottage or garden, a classical styled statue for your fountain could include cherubs holding the spout. On the other hand, a more modern garden can include more of a bold design. Just allow your imagination to run loose.

The primary trait of a multi-tiered fountain is that water streams from a variety of different levels. Water runs down numerous tiers in a cascading fountain.

Since external fountains occupy ample space, think about putting in a wall fountain or a pondless fountain. Since the reservoirs required for these kinds of fountains are hidden underground, you can make the most of the space at your disposal.

Install a Japanese fountain if you are looking for a feeling of relaxation. The water flows through bamboo sticks in this kind of water feature. The cycle of water falling into a rustic-styled recipient or a molded stone repeats itself again and again.

Another type of fountain is made of glass. A more traditional look is provided by trellis-style fountains which feature shaped metalwork. Gardens with a lot of sharp edges as well as contemporary forms and designs are better for these types of water features. A wondrous effect is created when water streams down the sheets of glass. Colorful LED lights are also included in some fountains to illuminate the water as it down down the sheet of glass. The jagged surface of rock waterfall fountain creates an appealing façade as the water softly trickles downwards.

A large rock drilled with holes which then has pipes inserted into it is what differentiates a bubbling rock fountain. The gurgles and bubbles at the top are the result of the low pressure used to trigger the water upwards. The water returns gently dripping down the sides of the rock to reach its starting point. Little gardens are ideal for this kind of fountain. Water is moved at low pressure in this kind of fountain, so you can be assured knowing that it will not spray all over should the wind pick up.

Solar fountains have recently gained in popularity because they are powered by sunlight. The reasons for this are diverse, from the absence of wires and the reduced complexities to the lower power bills and the beneficial impact on our environment. The wide-ranging designs in outdoor solar-run fountains means you will not have to compromise on style.

Eye-Catching Backyard Tiered Fountains

Gardens are typical places to showcase a multi-tiered fountain, a style which has historically been very fashionable. These kinds of fountains are popular in Italy, Spain, and other Mediterranean nations. While they can be seen anywhere, they are most common in the center of building complexes and in popular areas where people gather. All multi-level fountains are beautiful, although some have much more elaborate carvings than others.

Any area can be embellished with one, although a more conventional setting is sometimes more appropriate. It should appear as if the fountain has been part of the environment since the beginning and should blend in accordingly.

The vegetation in your yard is a very good spot to fit in your water feature. People will be focused on the pond, artificial river or fountain in your garden. The versatility of water features is that they can be set up in large backyards as well as in small verandas. The ambience can be significantly changed by placing it in the best place and using the right accessories.

Santa Maria in Cosmedin: A Roman Water Feature Worthy of Visiting

Archaeologists and restorers on the lookout for pagan and Christian antiquities in Rome have come across a treasure trove of them in the area of the Santa Maria in Cosmedin. The nearby basilica is largely famous for the marble sculpture known as the Bocca della Verità, (Mouth of Truth) located in its entryway. When the Santa Maria in Cosmedin fountain was built in 1719, it was off the beaten track and generally unknown as a result. It was said that there was nothing worth seeing in this area because it was bleak and abandoned making it an unfriendly place to visit. As part of a project to revitalize the piazza outside the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, the Italian architect Carlo Bizzaccheri was instructed by Pope Clement XI to take on the job. The task of laying down the church’s foundation started on August 17, 1717.

After blessing of the first stone, medals bearing the illustration of the Blessed Virgin, for whom the church is named, and of St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of water, were thrown into the foundation.
