Contemporary Garden Decor: Fountains and their Roots

The incredible architecture of a fountain allows it to provide clean water or shoot water high into air for dramatic effect and it can also serve as an excellent design feature to enhance your home.

Originally, fountains only served a functional purpose. 6057-4203__39544.jpg Cities, towns and villages made use of nearby aqueducts or springs to supply them with potable water as well as water where they could bathe or wash. Up to the late 19th century, water fountains had to be near an aqueduct or reservoir and more elevated than the fountain so that gravity could make the water flow down or jet high into the air. Acting as an element of adornment and celebration, fountains also supplied clean, fresh drinking water. Roman fountains often depicted imagery of animals or heroes made of metal or stone masks. During the Middle Ages, Muslim and Moorish garden designers included fountains in their designs to mimic the gardens of paradise. To demonstrate his dominance over nature, French King Louis XIV included fountains in the Garden of Versailles. The Romans of the 17th and 18th centuries manufactured baroque decorative fountains to glorify the Popes who commissioned them as well as to mark the spot where the restored Roman aqueducts entered the city.

Indoor plumbing became the main source of water by the end of the 19th century thereby limiting urban fountains to mere decorative elements. The introduction of unique water effects and the recycling of water were two things made possible by swapping gravity with mechanical pumps.

Contemporary fountains are used to adorn public spaces, honor individuals or events, and enhance recreational and entertainment events.

Keeping Your Outdoor Fountain Tidy

Adequate care and regular upkeep are important to the longevity of water fountains. It is essential to clean it out and take out any debris or foreign objects that might have gotten into or onto it. Another factor is that water that is subjected to sunlight is prone to growing algae. In order to prevent this, there are some common ingredients that can be mixed into the water, such as vinegar, sea salt, or hydrogen peroxide. There are those who like to use bleach, but that is harmful to any animals that might drink or bathe in the water - so should therefore be avoided.

Every 3-4 months, garden fountains should undergo a decent cleaning. To start with you must drain the water. When you have done this, scrub inside the water reservoir with a mild detergent.

If there are any small grooves, work with a toothbrush to reach each and every spot. Any soap residue that remains on your fountain can damage it, so be sure it is all rinsed off.

Make sure you get rid of any calcium or plankton by taking the pump apart and scrubbing the inside thoroughly. You might want to let it soak in vinegar for a few hours to make it quicker to clean. Build-up can be a big hassle, so use mineral or rain water over tap water, when possible, to prevent this dilemma.

And finally, make sure the water level is continuously full in order to keep your fountain operating optimally. Allowing the water level to get too low can cause damage to the pump - and you certainly don't want that!

Aqueducts: The Remedy to Rome's Water Challenges

Prior to 273, when the 1st elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in Roma, residents who dwelled on hills had to travel even further down to get their water from natural sources. During this time period, there were only 2 other techniques capable of delivering water to high areas, subterranean wells and cisterns, which accumulated rainwater. To supply water to Pincian Hill in the early 16th century, they applied the emerging method of redirecting the stream from the Acqua Vergine aqueduct’s underground channel. Throughout the length of the aqueduct’s route were pozzi, or manholes, that gave access. The manholes made it easier to clean the channel, but it was also achievable to use buckets to extract water from the aqueduct, as we observed with Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi when he operated the property from 1543 to 1552, the year he died. He didn’t get enough water from the cistern that he had established on his property to gather rainwater.

Through an orifice to the aqueduct that flowed under his property, he was able to fulfill his water demands.

How a Water Fountain Can Make Your World Better

From improving air quality to adding a feeling of tranquility to the area, a fountain adds so much to your life.

Both an indoor and an outdoor garden fountain will help you in ways you might not even know. All over the world coastal cities have large populations which may perhaps be related to the fact that the human body consists primarily of water. All living beings need water to exist, and while you could move to a high-priced house on the beach somewhere, a much easier and less expensive option is to install a water feature wherever you live.

If you want to make your porch, patio, or back yard even more enjoyable, think about getting an outdoor garden fountain. Even if you are already happy with your outdoor area, the introduction of one of the many outdoor fountains available will make you adore it even more. It can be mounted on the outside wall of your house above the patio, or even on the interior wall of a screened porch.

Make your flower garden an oasis of serenity by adding a lovely tiered model. The flow of the water in birdbath fountains, as compared to still water, signifies that bacteria and algae will not accumulate in the water, making for fresher water for wild birds. Add the final touch with the enticing sound of moving water in your garden.

A True Roman Wonder: The Santa Maria Fountain in Cosmedin

Incredible finds of both Christian and pagan origin have been made by archaeologists and restorers in the area of Santa Maria in Cosmedin in Rome. Located in the portico of the nearby basilica one can see the acclaimed marble sculpture known as the Bocca della Verità (Mouth of Truth). Since the Santa Maria in Cosmedin fountain (1719) was located off the beaten track, it remained relatively unknown. The part of town where it was situated was forlorn and uninviting which generally kept people away. It was then that the Italian architect Carlo Bizzaccheri was mandated by Pope Clement XI to erect a water fountain in the square outside the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin in an effort to make the area more popular. The work of laying down the church’s first stones began on August 17, 1717. Medals bearing the imagery of the Blessed Virgin, for whom the church is named, and of St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of water”, were thrown in the foundation following the blessing of the first rock.

The Many Designs in Outdoor Water Features

A garden can be a small sanctuary, providing you a serene place to stop and enjoy some outdoor time. Even though there is a lot of work involved in getting a new one designed and constructed, it is worth the effort for anyone who will be using it. Both the “curb appeal” and the value of your real estate will be driven up when you set up an eye-catching garden. Experts recommend adding flowers or trees, a pavement, a lovely water feature, or unique statues to enhance the overall look of your property.

A water fountain can make a significant difference to the charm and tranquility of your garden. A place of balance and serenity will appear from what was at first just a plain spot. You are not the only one who will enjoy the serenity the sounds of the water create; you might also notice an increase in the number of birds and other friendly animals visiting. Your fountain will quickly turn into the main feature of your garden or yard.
