A beautiful garden will boost any property value, as “curb appeal” is vital to the market value. Self-Contained fountains are inexpensive and easy to install and are therefore in demand.

The plumbing, pump, and other parts come with the fountain. There is another use for the label “self-contained”, a reference to a fountain that has its own water reservoir.

Once you decide where you want to set upyour fountain, your landscaper should confirm that it is not too bumpy or uneven. Lawns and gardens tend to be bumpy so your landscaper will have to even out the area where you want to install it. Your water feature is now prepared for placement and the addition of water. It is now time to plug it in using either an electrical outlet, a solar panel, or batteries.

Since it is free-standing and does not need an external water source or plumbing, a self-contained fountain is perfect for anyone looking for ease and convenience. Lots of people put them in the middle of the garden, but they can really go anywhere. You purchase them in myriad different materials such as cast stone, metal, ceramic, and fiberglass.

Typical Fountains Found in Japanese Gardens

A water element is an essential part of any Japanese garden. Since Japanese water fountains are considered symbolic of physical and spiritual cleansing, they are often positioned in the doorway of buildings or shrines.

It is unusual to see elaborately -designed Japanese fountains since the focus is supposed to be on the water itself.

You will also see many fountains that have spouts built of bamboo. Underneath the bamboo spout is generally a stone basin which receives the water as it trickles down from the spout. Even when new, it should be made to look as if it has been outside for a long time. So that the fountain appears at one with nature, people normally adorn it with natural stones, pretty flowers, and plants. As you can probably guess, this fountain is symbolic rather than purely decorative.

An alternative is to get a stone fountain, set it on a bed of rock, and place live bamboo and pretty stones around it. Eventually moss begins to creep over the stones and cover them, and as that happens the area starts to look more and more like a natural part of the landscape.

If you are blessed enough to have a big plot of open land you can create a water feature that is much more elaborate. Give some thought to adding a beautiful final touch like a pond filled with koi or a tiny stream.

However, water does not have to be an element in a Japanese water fountain.

It is appropriate to use representations of water in lieu of real water, such as sand, rocks, or natural stones. You can also collect flat stones and put them close enough together that they look like water in motion.

The Story of Wall Fountains

The Roman academic Pope Nicholas V (1397-1455) decided to have hundreds of historic Greek books translated into Latin. Turning the city into the deserving capital of the Christian community was important to him, so he also took steps to embellish it. Beginning in 1453, he called for the reconstruction of the Acqua Vergine, a decaying Roman aqueduct which had carried fresh drinking water into the city from eight miles away. Nicholas V also reinstated the Roman convention of installing imposing fountains, known as mostras, to mark the end point of the aqueduct. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was commissioned by him to put up a water fountain where we now find the wondrous Trevi Fountain. The aqueduct he had rebuilt included changes and extensions which eventually allowed it to supply the necessary water to the Trevi Fountain as well as the renowned baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona.

Liven Up Your Workaday Life with a Water Element

From improving air quality to contributing a feeling of tranquility to the area, a fountain adds so much to your life.

You might not even be aware of the degree to which a water fountain, whether inside or outside, will improve your daily life. People around the world flock to coastal cities and big bodies of water, most likely driven by the fact that our bodies have a high water content. All living creatures need water to exist, and while you could move to a high-priced house on the beach somewhere, a much easier and economical possibility is to install a water feature wherever you live.

The addition of an outdoor garden fountain to any deck, terrace, or veranda will make a huge difference to your enjoyment of the space. Even if you are already happy with your outdoor area, the addition of one of the many outdoor fountains available will make you love it even more. It can be hung on the outside wall of your house above the patio, or even on the interior wall of a screened porch. Your flower garden will become a place of elegant decadence and tranquility if you put in a tiered type. You will notice lots of birds coming to your garden if you put in a birdbath fountain, as the water stays fresher than still water since it is continuously flowing. Complete your garden area with the serene sound of flowing water.
