A Magnificent Example of Roman Artistry: The Santa Maria in Cosmedin Waterwork

Archaeologists and restorers alike have stumbled upon a treasure trove of pagan and Christian relics on the grounds of Santa Maria in Cosmedin in Rome. a-373__70142.jpg Found in the portico of the nearby basilica one can find the celebrated marble sculpture known as the Bocca della Verità (Mouth of Truth). Built in 1719, the Santa Maria in Cosmedin water fountain was relatively unknown and situated far from sight making it difficult to visit. Since the nearby area was gloomy and mostly uninhabited, people were not particularly interested in visiting it. As part of a project to modernize the square outside the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, the Italian architect Carlo Bizzaccheri was commissioned by Pope Clement XI to take on the job. Work on the church's infrastructure started on on August 11, 1717. Medallions bearing the imagery of the Blessed Virgin, for whom the church is named, and of St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of water”, were thrown in the foundation following the blessing of the first stone.

A Peek into the Beginnings of Wall Fountains

During his reign (1397-1455) of the Roman Catholic Church, the learned Pope Nicholas V directed countless of translations of ancient Greek classics into Latin. He also initiated the embellishment of the city to turn it into the worthy capital of the Christian world. The damaged Roman aqueduct which had carried potable drinking water in the into the capital city from countless miles away was restored beginning in 1453 at his behest. The mostra, a monumental commemorative fountain built by ancient Romans to mark the point of arrival of an aqueduct, was a custom also restored by Nicholas V. The Trevi Fountain now occupies the space previously filled with a wall fountain built by Leon Battista Albert, an architect commissioned by him. The water which ultimately supplied the Trevi Fountain, as well as the acclaimed baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona, came from the rebuilt and modified aqueduct.

The Influence of the Norman Conquest on Anglo-Saxon Gardens

The Anglo-Saxon way of life was significantly changed by the appearance of the Normans in the later eleventh century. The Normans were better than the Anglo-Saxons at architecture and horticulture when they came into power. But there was no time for home life, domesticated design, and adornment until the Normans had overcome the whole region.

Castles were more basic designs and often built on blustery hills, where their tenants spent both time and space to practicing offense and defense, while monasteries were considerable stone buildings, regularly situated in the widest, most fertile hollows. The barren fortresses did not provide for the calm avocation of gardening. The early Anglo-Norman style of architecture is symbolized in Berkeley Castle, which is perhaps the most untouched sample we have. It is said that the keep was developed during William the Conqueror's time. An enormous terrace encompasses the building, serving as an obstacle to assailants trying to dig under the castle walls. On 1 of these terraces lies a stylish bowling green: it's coated in grass and flanked by an old yew hedge that is formed into the shape of rough ramparts.

Incorporate the Benefit of Feng Shui into Your Garden

Incorporating feng shui design into your yard will help spread its energy into your home and your life.

As far as the size of your garden goes, it is not extremely important when incorporating feng shui design to it. If you have a lush, beautiful one, that is great, but even a small area works well with feng shui design.

Feng shui techniques are the same whether you are working in your garden or your house. In order to understand the energy map, or bagua, of your garden, you will first need to know your home’s bagua.

It is also essential to know the five elements in the theory of feng shui and how best to use each one to optimize its energy.

Feng shui design calls for the Earth element, for example, to be integrated into the northeastern corner of your garden, as that area connects to self-cultivation and personal development energy. A Zen garden with some lovely natural rocks is ideal for that spot, as the rocks represent the Earth element.

A water feature is a suitable add-on to the following feng shui areas: Southeast (money & abundance), East (health & family), and North (career & path in life).

Original Water Supply Solutions in The City Of Rome

Aqua Anio Vetus, the first raised aqueduct founded in Rome, started off delivering the men and women living in the hills with water in 273 BC, though they had relied on natural springs up till then. Outside of these aqueducts and springs, wells and rainwater-collecting cisterns were the lone technological innovations readily available at the time to supply water to segments of higher elevation. From the early sixteenth century, water was routed to Pincian Hill via the subterranean channel of Acqua Vergine. As originally constructed, the aqueduct was provided along the length of its channel with pozzi (manholes) constructed at regular intervals.

Though they were initially manufactured to make it possible to support the aqueduct, Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi started using the manholes to accumulate water from the channel, opening when he purchased the property in 1543. It appears that, the rainwater cistern on his property wasn’t good enough to fulfill his needs. That is when he made the decision to create an access point to the aqueduct that ran below his property.

The Broad Array of Wall Water Fountains

A small patio or a courtyard is a great spot to put your wall fountain when you need peace and quiet. Even a little space can include a custom-built one. Both the stand alone and fitted versions must have a spout, a water basin, internal tubing, and a pump. You have many styles to a lot to choose from whether you are searching for a traditional, modern, classical, or Asian style.

Stand-alone wall fountains, commonly known as floor fountains, are noticeably big and feature a basin on the ground.

On the other hand, a fountain attached to a wall can be incorporated onto an existing wall or fit into a new wall. The appearance of your landscape will seem more unified instead of disjointed when you put in this style of water feature.
