Where did Garden Water Fountains Come From?

The amazing or ornamental effect of a fountain is just one of the purposes it fulfills, as well as providing drinking water and adding a decorative touch to your property.

The main purpose of a fountain was originally strictly practical. Inhabitants of cities, townships and small towns used them as a source of drinking water and a place to wash, which meant that fountains had to be connected to nearby aqueduct or spring. Until the late nineteenth, century most water fountains functioned using gravity to allow water to flow or jet into the air, therefore, they needed a supply of water such as a reservoir or aqueduct located higher than the fountain. Acting as an element of adornment and celebration, fountains also provided clean, fresh drinking water. The main materials used by the Romans to create their fountains were bronze or stone masks, mostly illustrating animals or heroes. Muslims and Moorish garden designers of the Middle Ages included fountains to re-create smaller models of the gardens of paradise. The fountains seen in the Gardens of Versailles were intended to show the power over nature held by King Louis XIV of France. The Romans of the 17th and 18th centuries manufactured baroque decorative fountains to glorify the Popes who commissioned them as well as to mark the spot where the restored Roman aqueducts entered the city.

Since indoor plumbing became the standard of the day for fresh, drinking water, by the end of the 19th century urban fountains were no longer needed for this purpose and they became purely ornamental. The introduction of unique water effects and the recycling of water were two things made possible by replacing gravity with mechanical pumps.

Modern-day fountains function mostly as decoration for open spaces, to honor individuals or events, and enhance entertainment and recreational gatherings.

The Profound Advantages of Fountains

Your quality of life will be absolutely influenced by a fountain as it not only provides you a place of tranquility and calm, but also serves to clean the air.

There are many positive aspects to having an indoor or exterior water fountain which you may not even recognize. It is most likely no coincidence that the human body is composed primarily of water, and that people are drawn to coastal cities. Water is vital for life, and a water feature can provide the benefits of water in a simple and affordable way.

Exterior Wall Fountains: The Many Styles Available

If you want to have a place to relax as well as add some pizzazz to a small area such as a patio or courtyard, wall fountains are ideal because they do not occupy much space. The multitude of styles in outdoor wall fountains, including traditional, classic, contemporary, or Asian, means that you can find the one best suited to your wishes. If you are looking for a unique design, a custom-made one can be specially made to meet your specifications.

The two types of water features available to you are mounted and stand-alone models. You can place a mounted wall fountain because they are little and self-contained. Fountains of this type need to be lightweight, therefore, they are typically made of resin (resembling stone) or fiberglass. Floor fountains are freestanding, large, and also have a basin on the ground as well as a flat side against the wall. There are no weight limits on these kinds of cast stone water features.

It is a good idea to incorporate a customized fountain into a new or existing wall, something often recommended by landscape experts. Installing the basin against the wall and installing all the plumbing work needs a professional mason to do it correctly.

The wall will need to have a spout or fountain mask incorporated into it. Custom-built wall fountains contribute to a unified look because they become part of the scenery rather than look like a later addition.

The greenery in your garden is the perfect place to place your water feature. People will be focused on the pond, artificial river or fountain in your yard. Examples of spots where you can install a water feature include large lawns or small patios. The best way to improve the atmosphere, place it in a good place and use the right accompaniments.

The Fascinating Roots of the Outdoor Fountain

During his time in control (1397-1455) of the Roman Catholic Church, the learned Pope Nicholas V directed countless of translations of old Greek classics into Latin. Turning the city into the deserving capital of the Christian community was important to him, so he also took steps to enhance it. In 1453 he initiated the rebuilding of the Aqua Vergine, an historic Roman aqueduct which had carried clean drinking water into the city from many miles away. Nicholas V also reinstated the Roman convention of installing imposing fountains, referred to as mostras, to mark the end point of the aqueduct. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was instructed by him to put up a wall fountain where we now see the breath-taking Trevi Fountain. The adjustments, as well as the extensions included in the restored aqueduct, ultimately made it possible to provide the Trevi Fountain and the well-known baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona with the necessary water to function.
