Improve Your Garden with the Use of Feng Shui

Experience the health benefits of feng shui by introducing its design elements into your yard.

When incorporating feng shui design into your gardden, even a very small area works. 1258_aged_stone__24611.jpg If you have a lush, eye-catching one, that is great, but even a small area works well with feng shui design.

Whether you are adding feng shui design to your home or garden, the tools are the same. As the energy map, or bagua, of your garden is an extension of your home's bagua, you will need to start off by knowing the bagua of the house.

It is also crucial to know the five elements in the theory of feng shui and how best to use each one to maximize its energy.

An example of this is that Earth is the feng shui element you should include in the northeast section of your garden because that part of your garden connects to the energy of personal growth and self-cultivation. A Zen garden with some pretty natural rocks is ideal for that spot, as the rocks represent the Earth element.

People thinking about including a water feature into their garden should place it in one of these feng shui areas: North (career & path in life), Southeast (money and abundance), or East (health & family).

Pick from Any Number of Exterior Wall Fountain Styles

If you want to create a place to relax and add some pizzazz to a small area such as a patio or courtyard, wall fountains are perfect because they do not occupy much space.

The multitude of styles in outdoor wall fountains, including traditional, classic, contemporary, or Asian, means that you can find the one best suited to your tastes. Your preferences dictate the type you buy so while there may not be a prefabricated fountain to satisfy you, you do have the option of having a customized one.

Depending on your wishes, you can pick from mounted or freestanding models. You can install a mounted wall fountain because they are small and self-contained. Wall fountains made of resin (resembling stone) or fiberglass are usually lightweight so they can be easily hung. Sizable free-standing wall fountains, often referred to as floor fountains, have their basins positioned on the floor and a flat side leaning on a wall. Normally made of cast stone, these water features have no weight restrictions.

Custom-built fountains which can be integrated into a new or existing wall are often prescribed by landscaping designers. The basin and all the necessary plumbing are best installed by a qualified mason. It is also vital to include a spout or fountain mask to build it into the wall.

If you want a cohesive look for your garden, get a customized wall fountain because it becomes part of the scenery rather than a later addition.

Santa Maria in Cosmedin: A Roman Water Display Worthy of Experiencing

Remarkable discoveries of both Christian and pagan origin have been made by archaeologists and restorers in the area around Santa Maria in Cosmedin in Rome. The celebrated marble sculpture called the Bocca della Verità (Mouth of Truth) can be seen in the portico of the basilica nearby. Built in 1719, the Santa Maria in Cosmedin fountain was not well known and located far from sight making it hard to visit. The part of town where it was located was depressing and bleak which generally kept people away. In order to modernize the square outside the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, Pope Clement XI commissioned an Italian architect by the name of Carlo Bizzaccheri to create a water feature for the area. August 11, 1717 saw the beginning of the task to lay down the foundation of the church. Medals bearing the imagery of the Blessed Virgin, for whom the church is named, and of St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of water”, were thrown in the foundation following the blessing of the first rock.

A Back Story of Fountains

During his time in control (1397-1455) of the Roman Catholic Church, the intellectual Pope Nicholas V authorized countless of translations of old Greek classics into Latin. He also initiated the embellishment of the city to make it into the worthy capital of the Christian world. Beginning in 1453, he called for the restoration of the Acqua Vergine, a decaying Roman aqueduct which had transported clean drinking water into the city from eight miles away. Nicholas V also embarked on the building of mostras, an old Roman practice of putting up spectacular public fountains to indicate the terminal point of an aqueduct. At his bidding, the architect Leon Battista Alberti began the building of a wall fountain in the place where the imposing Trevi Fountain now stands.

The changes, as well as the extensions included in the restored aqueduct, ultimately made it possible to provide the Trevi Fountain and the well-known baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona with the necessary water to function.

Design Variations for Outdoor Water Features

Gardens are great places to take a break from the day-to-day routine and get some fresh air and appreciate nature. While there is a lot of work involved in getting a new one designed and made, it is worth the effort for anyone who will be using it. A beautiful garden will increase any property value, as “curb appeal” is vital to the market value. Many people decide to add to their landscaping by putting in statues or other art, re-doing the pavement of their driveway, planting trees, or building a water feature.

A water fountain can make a significant difference to the elegance and tranquility of your garden. A place of balance and serenity will appear from what was at first just a plain spot. You are not the only one who will appreciate the serenity the sounds of the water create; you might also notice an increase in the number of birds and other friendly animals visiting. Your fountain will immediately turn into the main feature of your garden or yard.

Contained Water Features: Are They Convenient?

Self-Contained fountains are cheaper and easy to install and are therefore quite common. Since all pieces are included with the fountain, no additional parts are required. Fountains that feature their own water supply are also known as “self-contained”.

Self-contained fountains are easy to install making them well suited for anyone needing a patio fountain. They are also convenient to move from place to place.

The first matter the landscaper will need to determine is whether or not the land is even. If your landscaper thinks the ground is too bumpy, he can always level it for you. You are now prepared to install your water feature and fill it with water. The last step is to plug it into an outlet, a solar panel, or batteries.

If you need a fountain that will not need an outside water source or additional plumbing, a self-contained fountain is best. Lots of people put them in the middle of the garden, but they can really go anywhere. There are a number of materials that can be used to build them including cast stone, metal, ceramic, and fiberglass.
