Eye-Catching Backyard Tiered Water Fountains

or_153__25968.jpg Gardens are popular places to put up a multi-tiered fountain, a style which has historically been very fashionable. Mediterranean countries such as Italy and Spain typically have many tiered fountains. Common places to see them are in courtyards and city squares. While some tiered fountains have ornate designs including sculptures or artwork, others are very basic.

Traditional or classic surroundings are ideal places for them. It should appear as if the fountain has been part of the decor since the beginning and should blend in accordingly.

Original Water Delivery Solutions in Rome

Rome’s very first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in 273 BC; prior to that, residents residing at higher elevations had to rely on natural springs for their water. Outside of these aqueducts and springs, wells and rainwater-collecting cisterns were the lone techniques readily available at the time to supply water to segments of high elevation. In the very early 16th century, the city began to use the water that ran beneath the earth through Acqua Vergine to furnish water to Pincian Hill. Throughout the time of its initial building and construction, pozzi (or manholes) were located at set intervals along the aqueduct’s channel. Whilst these manholes were manufactured to make it easier to sustain the aqueduct, it was also feasible to use containers to pull water from the channel, which was carried out by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he invested in the property in 1543 to his passing in 1552.

He didn’t get a sufficient quantity of water from the cistern that he had constructed on his property to gather rainwater. By using an opening to the aqueduct that flowed underneath his property, he was set to suit his water desires.

Disappearing Water Fountains: A Few of the Plusses of Having one in your Garden

The term “pondless fountain” is one other way to refer to a disappearing fountain. It is known as “disappearing” since the water source is under ground. Disappearing fountains add tranquil sound effects and striking visuals to any place where people gather. They are available in a wide variety of designs, some of which are ceramic urns, waterfalls, granite columns, and millstones.

There are many distinctive advantages to a disappearing fountain contrary to other fountains. The water comes from underground and does not form a large pool above ground so any risk to those around it is reduced. That said, you will not have to be anxious about the security of your children. Moreover, no water is going to evaporate because it is not subjected to the open air. Other kinds of fountains waste more water due to evaporation. The water source will remain clean and free of debris since it is below gound and algae will not grow in it, so you will not need to spend a lot of time cleaning it. Finally, due to its reduced size, it is less difficult to install it where you want it than other types of fountains.

Keep Your Outdoor Fountain Clean

Water fountains will last a very long time with routine cleaning and maintenance. Leaves, twigs, and bugs often find their way into fountains, so it is essential to keep yours free from such debris. Another factor is that water that is exposed to sunlight is prone to growing algae. Either sea salt, hydrogen peroxide, or vinegar can be mixed into the water to prevent this issue. Bleach can also be dissolved into the water, however this is not an ideal option as it can sicken birds or other animals.

Experts advise that the typical garden fountain undergoes a thorough cleaning every 3-4 months. First off you must remove the water.

When you have done this, scrub inside the water reservoir with a mild detergent. If there is detailed artwork, you might need to use a toothbrush for those hard-to-reach areas. Any soap residue that remains on your fountain can damage it, so be sure it is all rinsed off.

Make sure you get rid of any calcium or plankton by taking the pump apart and cleaning the inside carefully. Soaking it in vinegar for a time will make it easier to scrub. If you want to eliminate build-up in your fountain, use rain water or mineral water rather than tap water, as these don’t contain any components that might stick to the inside of the pump.

Lastly, make sure your fountain is always full by checking on it every day - this will keep it in tip-top shape. If the water level falls below the pump’s intake level, it can hurt the pump and cause it to burn out - something you don't want to happen!

Interestingly one of Seven Wonders of the World, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, were merely terraced rooftop gardens. They were designed to be water-proof and placed over a big, curved stone substructure with substantial storage rooms below. Water came to the terraces by using hydraulic devices and the soil was deep enough to grow trees with efficiency. Popular plants were thyme, poppy, anise, and rosemary.

A Magnificent Illustration of Roman Know-How: The Santa Maria in Cosmedin Water Feature

Both Christian and pagan artifacts have been found in large quantities by archaeologists and restorers scouring the area of the Santa Maria in Cosmedin in Rome. The celebrated marble sculpture known as the Bocca della Verità (Mouth of Truth) can be seen in the portico of the basilica nearby.

When the Santa Maria in Cosmedin fountain was constructed in 1719, it was off the beaten track and generally unknown as a result. For the most part, people stayed away from the area because it was a sad and deserted part of the city. It was a this time that Pope Clement XI commissioned the Italian architect Carlo Bizzaccheri to put up a fountain to renovate the square outside the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin. Work on the church's foundation commenced on on August 11, 1717. The first stone to be placed in the foundation was consecrated and medals bearing the illustrations of the Blessed Virgin, for whom the church is named, and St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of water, were also thrown in.
