Modern Garden Decoration: Garden Fountains and their Roots

50721md__16697.jpg The dramatic or ornamental effect of a fountain is just one of the purposes it fulfills, as well as providing drinking water and adding a decorative touch to your property.

The main purpose of a fountain was originally strictly practical. Inhabitants of cities, townships and small towns used them as a source of drinking water and a place to wash up, which meant that fountains had to be connected to nearby aqueduct or spring. Used until the 19th century, in order for fountains to flow or shoot up into the air, their source of water such as reservoirs or aqueducts, had to be higher than the water fountain in order to benefit from the power of gravity. Serving as an element of decoration and celebration, fountains also supplied clean, fresh drinking water. Roman fountains often depicted images of animals or heroes made of metal or stone masks. During the Middle Ages, Muslim and Moorish garden designers included fountains in their designs to mimic the gardens of paradise. King Louis XIV of France wanted to illustrate his superiority over nature by including fountains in the Gardens of Versailles. Seventeen and 18 century Popes sought to extol their positions by adding decorative baroque-style fountains at the point where restored Roman aqueducts arrived into the city.

Since indoor plumbing became the standard of the day for clean, drinking water, by the end of the 19th century urban fountains were no longer needed for this purpose and they became purely decorative. Gravity was replaced by mechanical pumps in order to permit fountains to bring in clean water and allow for amazing water displays.

Modern-day fountains serve mostly as decoration for public spaces, to honor individuals or events, and compliment entertainment and recreational events.

Why a Water Feature Can Make Your Life Better

The movement and sound of water emitted from a fountain have two health benefits: cleaning the air and proving a place of relaxation and peace, both of which will better your quality of life.

You might be surprised to learn of all the rewards of being around an indoor or outdoor garden fountain.

Water makes up a considerable proportion of our body composition, and populations world-wide tend to gravitate towards coastal areas. While there are many lavish ways to incorporate the benefits of water into your daily life (like investing in a beach house!), a much more accessible solution is to install a water feature in your home.

If you want to make your porch, patio, or back yard even more enjoyable, think about purchasing an outdoor garden fountain. Outdoor water elements can further elevate even the most gorgeous space. It can be installed on the external wall of your house above the patio, or even on the interior wall of a screened porch. Your flower garden will become a place of luxurious decadence and harmony if you put in a tiered type. The flow of the water in birdbath fountains, as compared to motionless water, means that bacteria and algae will not accumulate in the water, making for cleaner water for wild birds. Finish your garden area with the peaceful sound of flowing water.

Santa Maria in Cosmedin: A Roman Water Feature Worth Experiencing

Both Christian and pagan artifacts have been found in large quantities by archaeologists and restorers searching the area of the Santa Maria in Cosmedin in Rome. The celebrated marble sculpture called the Bocca della Verità (Mouth of Truth) is located in the portico of the basilica nearby. The situation of the Santa Maria in Cosmedin fountain (1719) was not in a well-known neighborhood and was, therefore, not oftentimes visited. It was said that there was very little to see in this area because it was bleak and desolate making it an unfriendly place to visit. It was a this time that Pope Clement XI commissioned the Italian architect Carlo Bizzaccheri to put up a fountain to renovate the square outside the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin. August 11. 1717 was the date when work on the church’s infrastructure began. The blessing of the first stone to be placed in the foundation was followed by medals being tossed in showing the images of the Blessed Virgin, for whom the church is named, and St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of water.

A Glimpse into the Beginnings of Fountains

During his time in control (1397-1455) of the Roman Catholic Church, the learned Pope Nicholas V authorized countless of translations of ancient Greek classics into Latin. He also undertook the beautification of the city to turn it into the true seat of the Christian world. The damaged Roman aqueduct which had carried potable drinking water in the into the capital city from numerous miles away was restored beginning in 1453 at his behest. Nicholas V also undertook the building of mostras, an old Roman tradition of putting up grand public fountains to indicate the terminal point of an aqueduct. The Trevi Fountain now occupies the area formerly filled with a wall fountain crafted by Leon Battista Albert, an architect commissioned by him. The modifications, as well as the extensions included in the restored aqueduct, ultimately made it possible to supply the Trevi Fountain and the well-known baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona with the necessary water to function.

Striking Backyard Tiered Fountains

For many years now now, multi-tiered fountains have been prevalent, particularly in gardens. You can see many of these fountains in Italy, Spain, and other Southern European countries. While they can be seen anywhere, they are most typical in the center of building complexes and in popular areas where people get together. All tiered fountains are alluring, although some have much more elaborate carvings than others.

People love to feature them in areas having a more traditional look and feel. The fountain should seem as old as the rest of the area and blend in accordingly.

A Smaller Garden Space? Don't Fret! You Can Still Have a Water Fountain

Since water makes a reflection, smaller spaces will appear bigger. Water features such as fountains profit from the reflective attributes stemming from dark materials. If your purpose is to showcase your new feature at night, underwater lights in various colors and shapes will do the trick. Eco-lights powered by sunlight can be used during the day whereas you can use lights to enhance your garden at night. Natural therapies use them because they exude a soothing effect which helps to relieve stress as well as anxiety.

Water just blends into the greenery in your yard. Turn your water feature such as a pond, artificial river, or fountain to become the central component of your backyard. Small verandas or major gardens is the perfect place to install a water feature. The atmosphere can be significantly changed by placing it in the best place and using the proper accessories.
