In order to achieve the maximum reflective properties of a water feature or fountain, it is best to use dark materials. If your objective is to showcase your new feature at night, underwater lights in various colors and shapes will do the trick. The sun is indispensable to power eco-lights during the day time while submerged lights are great for night use.

Where did Large Garden Fountains Come From?

A fountain, an amazing piece of engineering, not only supplies drinking water as it pours into a basin, it can also launch water high into the air for a noteworthy effect.

Originally, fountains only served a practical purpose. Cities, towns and villages made use of nearby aqueducts or springs to provide them with drinking water as well as water where they could bathe or wash. Up until the 19th century, fountains had to be higher and closer to a water supply, such as aqueducts and reservoirs, in order to take advantage of gravity which fed the fountains. Serving as an element of decoration and celebration, fountains also supplied clean, fresh drinking water. Roman fountains usually depicted images of animals or heroes made of metal or stone masks. Muslims and Moorish garden designers of the Middle Ages included fountains to re-create smaller versions of the gardens of paradise. To demonstrate his prominence over nature, French King Louis XIV included fountains in the Garden of Versailles. Seventeen and 18 century Popes sought to extol their positions by including decorative baroque-style fountains at the point where restored Roman aqueducts arrived into the city.

The end of the 19th century saw the rise in usage of indoor plumbing to provide drinking water, so urban fountains were relegated to purely decorative elements. Amazing water effects and recycled water were made possible by switching the power of gravity with mechanical pumps.

These days, fountains decorate public areas and are used to pay tribute to individuals or events and fill recreational and entertainment needs.

The Benefits of Pondless Water Features in your Garden

Disappearing fountains also go by the term “pondless” fountains. You cannot see where the water comes from, as it is underground. Disappearing fountains should be installed near any place people hang out regularly, as they add so much to the surrounding area. It is not difficult to find the design that is right for you, as there are so many to choose from such as millstones, ceramic urns, waterfalls, and also those with granite columns.

Disappearing fountains also offer many advantages. There is no big pool of water that could pose a threat to anyone since the water comes from beneath the ground. As such, it is safe for children to hang out near it. Moreover, no water is going to evaporate since it is not exposed to the open air. This means you will use less water than if you had another style of fountain. It is extremely low-maintenance since it is underground and not exposed to debris or algae. Finally, due to its more compact size, it is easier to fit it where you want it than other types of fountains.

The Many Designs in Backyard Water Features

Gardens allow you to retreat into nature and be outside when you want. While it is not a simple undertaking to build one, you will be grateful you did once you are able to relax and enjoy it.

Investing in a gorgeous garden is good, as it will increase the “curb appeal” and value of your home. Many people choose to add to their landscaping by putting in statues or other art, re-doing the pavement of their driveway, planting trees, or adding a water feature.

The visual appeal of any garden can be tremendously improved by just adding a water fountain. It will transform a plain area into a breathtaking place of peaceful tranquility. The trickling water of your fountain will not only give you a calming oasis, it will also attract wild birds and other friendly local animals. The rest of the garden will immediately become just background to the lovely new fountain.

The Wonderful Santa Maria in Cosmedin Waterwork in Rome

Archaeologists and restorers on the lookout for pagan and Christian artifacts in Rome have come upon a wealth of them in the area of the Santa Maria in Cosmedin. The nearby basilica is mainly famous for the marble sculpture known as the Bocca della Verità, (Mouth of Truth) located in its entryway.

Built in 1719, the Santa Maria in Cosmedin water fountain was relatively unknown and situated far from sight making it difficult to visit. It was said that there was nothing worth seeing in this area, as it was abject and abandoned making it an unfriendly place to visit. It was a this time that Pope Clement XI commissioned the Italian architect Carlo Bizzaccheri to put up a water fountain to modernize the square outside the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin. The work of laying down the church’s first stones began on August 17, 1717. After blessing of the first stone, medallions bearing the illustration of the Blessed Virgin, for whom the church is named, and of St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of water, were tossed into the foundation.
