A Real Roman Wonder: The Santa Maria Waterwork in Cosmedin

Archaeologists and restorers alike have stumbled upon a wealth of heathen and Christian artifacts on the grounds of Santa Maria in Cosmedin in Rome. wwlvs_cp_2__73204.jpg Found in the portico of the nearby basilica one can see the celebrated marble sculpture known as the Bocca della Verità (Mouth of Truth). When the Santa Maria in Cosmedin water fountain was constructed in 1719, it was off the beaten track and mostly unknown as a result. It was said that there was very little to see in this area because it was bleak and abandoned making it an unfriendly place to visit. It was a this time that Pope Clement XI commissioned the Italian architect Carlo Bizzaccheri to put up a water feature to refurbish the square outside the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin. Work on the church's foundation began on on August 11, 1717. After blessing of the first stone, medallions with the images of the Blessed Virgin, for whom the church is named, and of St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of water, were tossed into the foundation.

Enliven Your Everyday Life with a Fountain

Your quality of life will be favorably influenced by a fountain as it not only offers you a place of tranquility and calm, but also serves to clean the air.

There are many advantages to having an indoor or outdoor water fountain which you may not even recognize. All over the world coastal cities have large populations which may perhaps be related to the fact that the human body is composed primarily of water. While there are many extravagant ways to incorporate the benefits of water into your daily life (like investing in a beach house!), a much more convenient option is to put a water feature in your home.

Enhance any outdoor area by adding a beautiful outdoor garden fountain. Outdoor water features can further elevate even the most enchanting space.

It can be a lovely addition to the wall of your enclosed porch or outdoors above the veranda. Make your flower garden an oasis of tranquility by adding a beautiful tiered model. You will notice lots of birds visiting your garden if you install a birdbath fountain, as the water stays fresher than still water since it is constantly flowing. The enchanting sound of trickling water is the magic touch your garden area needs to become a haven of peace.

Aqueducts: The Answer to Rome's Water Challenges

Previous to 273, when the very first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was made in Rome, citizens who dwelled on hillsides had to journey further down to get their water from natural sources. If residents living at higher elevations did not have accessibility to springs or the aqueduct, they’d have to count on the remaining existing systems of the day, cisterns that compiled rainwater from the sky and subterranean wells that received the water from below ground. Starting in the sixteenth century, a brand new program was introduced, using Acqua Vergine’s subterranean sections to provide water to Pincian Hill. All through the length of the aqueduct’s passage were pozzi, or manholes, that gave access. While these manholes were developed to make it less difficult to preserve the aqueduct, it was also possible to use buckets to extract water from the channel, which was done by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he obtained the property in 1543 to his passing in 1552. Though the cardinal also had a cistern to get rainwater, it didn’t provide a sufficient amount of water. That is when he made a decision to create an access point to the aqueduct that ran under his property.

Dogs, Cats and Garden Fountains

If you are thinking about getting a water feature, make sure your pets like it. Pets such as dogs may mistake your freestanding fountain with a large pool to cool down in or a pond from which to drink. Your treasured pets will probably take well to a water element in your yard. Your fountain may fascinate birds who think it is a fantastic place to cool down, so it is important to think about where you will place this type of water feature. Installing a birdbath in your yard is the ideal solution if you want to attract birds. Setting up a wall water fountain inside your house is a good option if you want to avoid such concerns. These sorts of fountains are perfect for dental and medical offices, not to mention stately homes.

The Benefits of Pondless Water Fountains in your Yard

There are two labels for this type of fountain: “disappearing” and “pondless”. The origin of the water is not visible because it is below the surface of the ground. An ideal place for a disappearing fountain is anywhere that gets steady foot traffic, as it adds lovely visual and sound effects to the environment. They are available in a wide number of styles, some of which are ceramic urns, waterfalls, granite columns, and millstones.

Disappearing fountains also offer many benefits. There is no big pool of water that could pose a danger to anyone since the water comes from beneath the ground. As such, it is safe for children to be near it. Evaporating water is also not an issue because the water supply is not exposed to heat. This type of fountain, therefore, is a good choice for regions where there is a need to conserve water. The time needed on maintenanceis also minimized since algae does not grow underground and rubbish can not get into the water supply. Last but not least, because of its small size it can fit almost any place you wish.

The Popularity of Water Elements in Japanese Landscapes

Japanese gardens usually have a water element. The Japanese water fountain is considered symbolic of spiritual and physical cleaning, so it is typically placed in or near the doorways of temples or homes. Since water is supposed to be the central point of a fountain, you will notice that the designs are kept very simple.

Many people also get a water fountain that includes a bamboo spout. The water passes through the bamboo spout and collects in the stone basin below.

People typically make them look weathered and worn, even when they are new. So that the fountain seems at one with nature, people normally adorn it with natural stones, pretty flowers, and plants. Obviously, this fountain is something more than just a simple decoration.

An alternate approach is to get a stone fountain, set it on a bed of rock, and place live bamboo and pretty stones around it. In time, as moss gradually covers the stones, it starts to look even more natural-looking.

More substantial water features can be created if there is enough open land. Lots of people put in a koi pond or a little stream as a final touch.

There are alternative options if you do not want to put water in your Japanese fountain. Lots of people decide to represent water with sand, gravel, or rocks rather than putting in actual water. Natural rocks that are smooth and laid out tightly together can be used to create the illusion of flowing water.
