Santa Maria in Cosmedin: A Roman Water Fountain Worth Visiting

469_l__26729.jpg Amazing finds of both Christian and pagan roots have been made by archaeologists and restorers in the area around Santa Maria in Cosmedin in Rome. The Bocca della Verità (Mouth of Truth} is a renowned marble sculpture situated at the entrance of the nearby basilica. The situation of the Santa Maria in Cosmedin fountain (1719) was not in a well-known area and was, therefore, not frequently visited. The part of town where it was located was forlorn and uninviting which was enough to keep visitors away. In order to modernize the square outside the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, Pope Clement XI commissioned an Italian architect by the name of Carlo Bizzaccheri to put up a fountain for the area. The job of laying down the church’s foundation began on August 17, 1717. After blessing of the first stone, medallions bearing the images of the Blessed Virgin, for whom the church is named, and of St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of water, were thrown into the foundation.

Keeping Your Outdoor Fountain Clean

Adequate care and regular cleaning are important to the longevity of water fountains. It is important to clean it out and take out any debris or foreign objects that might have gotten into or onto it. Another factor is that water that is exposed to sunlight is susceptible to growing algae. Mix hydrogen peroxide, sea salt, or vinegar into the water to avoid this particular problem. Some people opt for adding bleach into the water, but the problem is that it harms wildlife - so it should be avoided.

Every three-four months, garden fountains should have a good cleaning. Before you can start cleaning it you should empty out all of the water. When you have done this, wash inside the water reservoir with a gentle detergent. If there is detailed artwork, you might need to use a toothbrush for those hard-to-reach areas. Do not leave any soap residue inside of or on the fountain.

Make sure you get rid of any calcium or plankton by taking the pump apart and washing the inside carefully. Letting it soak in vinegar for a few hours first will make it much easier to clean. If you want to eliminate build-up in your fountain, use rain water or mineral water rather than tap water, as these don’t contain any components that might stick to the inside of the pump.

And finally, make sure the water level is always full in order to keep your fountain working optimally.

Allowing the water to go below the pump’s intake level, can cause serious damage and even make the pump burn out - an undesired outcome!

How Feng Shui Make Your Backyard into a Haven

Feel the health benefits of feng shui by incorporating its design elements into your yard.

When introducing feng shui design into your gardden, even a very small area is adequate. A sizeable area is great for those lucky enough to have it, but a smaller area can still be useful in feng shui design.

Feng shui tools are the same whether you are working in your garden or your home. As the energy map, or bagua, of your garden is an extension of your house’s bagua, you will need to start by knowing the bagua of the house.

In order to make the most of feng shui, it is crucial to start by learning how to bolster each of its five elements.

The northeast corner of your garden, for instance, connects to personal growth and self-cultivation energy, and Earth is the feng shui element that is essential to incorporate it. Since rocks epitomize the Earth element in feng shui, you might think about putting some into a tranquil Zen garden in the northeast corner of your yard.

Give some thought to integrating a water feature into these feng shui areas: East (health & family), North (career & path in life), or Southeast (money and abundance).

A Wall Water Feature to Fit Your Decor

A small patio or a courtyard is a great spot to put your wall fountain when you seek peace and quiet. Moreover, it can be made to fit into any wall space since it does not occupy much room.

Both the stand alone and fitted models need to have a spout, a water basin, internal tubing, and a pump. There are many different styles available on the market including traditional, fashionable, classical, or Asian.

Usually quite large, freestanding wall fountains, also referred to as floor fountains, have their basins on the ground.

A wall-mounted water feature can either be incorporated onto a wall already in existence or built into a wall under construction. The look of your landscape will seem more unified instead of disjointed when you put in this kind of fountain.

Anglo-Saxon Gardens at the Time of the Norman Conquest

Anglo-Saxons experienced great changes to their daily lives in the latter half of the eleventh century due to the accession of the Normans. The Normans were better than the Anglo-Saxons at architecture and horticulture when they came into power. But home life, household architecture, and decoration were out of the question until the Normans taken over the entire population. Most often constructed upon windy summits, castles were basic structures that permitted their occupants to spend time and space to offensive and defensive programs, while monasteries were rambling stone buildings generally placed in only the most fecund, broad valleys. Peaceful pursuits such as gardening were out of place in these desolate citadels. The early Anglo-Norman style of architecture is exemplified in Berkeley Castle, which is perhaps the most untouched illustration we have. It is said that the keep was introduced during William the Conqueror's time. An enormous terrace encompasses the building, serving as an obstacle to assailants trying to dig under the castle walls. On one of these parapets is a scenic bowling green covered in grass and surrounded by an aged hedge of yew that has been designed into coarse battlements.

The Different Types of Backyard Fountains

If you want to chill out for a bit and get some fresh air, a garden is the perfect spot. If you are planning to spend a lot of time in yours, it is worth the effort it takes to do it properly. Investing in a beautiful garden is good, as it will increase the “curb appeal” and value of your home. There are many ways to improve the visual appeal of a yard, like adding flowers and plants, artwork, an attractive pavement, or a water feature.

A water fountain can make a substantial difference to the beauty and tranquility of your garden. It will transform a plain area into a gorgeous place of peaceful tranquility. The trickling water of your fountain will not only give you a calming oasis, it will also attract wild birds and other friendly local animals. Your fountain will promptly turn into the centerpiece of your garden or yard.
