A True Roman Wonder: The Santa Maria Fountain in Cosmedin

Archaeologists and restorers on the lookout for pagan and Christian artifacts in Rome have come upon a treasure trove of them in the area of the Santa Maria in Cosmedin. The celebrated marble sculpture known as the Bocca della Verità (Mouth of Truth) is located in the portico of the basilica nearby. Built in 1719, the Santa Maria in Cosmedin fountain was relatively unknown and situated far from sight making it difficult to visit. or-152set__92585.jpg The part of town where it was situated was forlorn and bleak which was enough to keep visitors away. In order to refurbish the square outside the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, Pope Clement XI commissioned an Italian architect by the name of Carlo Bizzaccheri to put up a fountain for the area. August 11, 1717 saw the start of the job to put down the foundation of the church. The first stone to be placed in the foundation was blessed and medallions bearing the images of the Blessed Virgin, for whom the church is named, and St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of water, were also thrown in.

The Wide Array of Styles of Water Wall Fountains

Small patios or courtyards are a perfect place to set up wall fountains since they add style to an area with limited space. The myriad of designs in outdoor wall fountains, including traditional, classic, contemporary, or Asian, means that you can find the one suitable to your tastes. While there are innumerable prefabricated ones on the market, you may need a custom-built fountain if none of these are appealing to you.

Depending on your wishes, you can select from mounted or freestanding types. Small, self-contained mounted wall fountains can be hung on any surface. Wall fountains made of resin ( similar to stone) or fiberglass are typically light so they can be easily hung. Large-sized free-standing wall fountains, often referred to as floor fountains, have their basins positioned on the floor and a flat side leaning on a wall. Water features such as these are typically manufactured of cast stone and have no weight limits.

Many experienced landscapers favor custom-built fountains which can be incorporated into a brand-new wall or an existing one. The basin and all the required plumbing are best installed by a qualified mason. You will need to incorporate a spout or fountain mask into the wall. The cohesive look produced by customized wall fountains make them appear to be part of the landscape instead of an afterthought.

Animals and Water Fountains

If you are thinking about buying a water feature, ensure that your pets like it. Your pet dog could think that your freestanding fountain resembles a large pond to drink from or a pool in which to swim. Think about setting up a water element in your yard since it is a feature that will affect your much loved pets favorably. Your fountain may attract birds who think it is a fantastic place to cool down, so it is important to think about where you will place this type of water feature. Add a birdbath if your objective is to draw birds to your garden. To prevent this, however, installing a wall water fountain inside your residence is a great option. These types of fountains are ideal for dental and medical offices, not to mention stately homes.

An Introduction to Contained Garden Water Fountains

Given that contained fountains are both inexpensive and easy to install, they are very popular.

You do not need to have any other components because they all come included with the instructions for your fountain. A second meaning of “self-contained” is a fountain which comes with its own a water source.

Self-contained fountains are easy to install making them ideal for anyone looking for a patio fountain. They are effortlessly transportable too in case you later decide to move it somewhere else.

The place you want to put your fountain will need to be even, so your landscaper will need to first decide if this is the case. Lawns and gardens tend to be bumpy so your landscaper will have to even out the spot where you want to install it. Your water feature is now ready for installation and the addition of water. Last but not least, connect it to a solar panel, a wall outlet, or batteries, and it will be ready to go.

Since it is free-standing and does not require an alternative water source or plumbing, a self-contained fountain is perfect for anyone looking for ease and convenience. Many people place them in the center of the garden, but they can really go anywhere. You purchase them in many differing materials such as cast stone, metal, ceramic, and fiberglass.

The Allure of Multi-Tiered Water Features

Fountains with multiple levels can be seen just about anywhere and have been featured in gardens for many years. You can see a lot of these fountains in Italy, Spain, and other Southern European countries. Piazzas and building courtyards are very popular places where you will find tiered fountains. While some tiered fountains have sophisticated designs including sculptures or artwork, others are very simple.

Any area can be embellished with one, although a more traditional setting is sometimes more appropriate. If done right, anyone seeing the fountain will think it has been there forever.

Outdoor Water Features: Installation Recommendations

When considering where to set up your garden fountain, do not forget that you will need somewhere to plug it in and a convenient source of water. The practical side of setting one up is often disregarded because people get so focused on the excitement of it. Since standard power cords are only 12 feet in length, you might need to attach an extension cord to reach the most convenient 120v outlet. A practical place to get water is important since you will need to fill your fountain. It is challenging to move water from one place to another. The simplest way to fill the fountain is with a nearby water hose. The ideal setup is with a water fountain autofill, but this has to be hooked up to an external water line and requires a skilled person to install it.
