Outdoor Water Features: Setup Guidelines

Two things many people ignore when planning the installation of a garden fountain is a handy water source and an electrical outlet nearby. The joy of owning one occasionally causes people to overlook the technical details when setting it up for the first time. If you require an extension cord to reach a 120v wall socket, feel free to use one, as standard power cords are only 12 feet long. Install your fountain in a place close to a water source as you will need to fill it. It is tough to move water from one location to another. angel cherub__67925.original.jpg The simplest way to fill the fountain is with a nearby garden hose. If you have an expert on hand, you may want to consider getting a water fountain autofill with a connection to an external water line, as this would be much less difficult in the long run.

How Many Kinds of Garden Water Fountains Are There?

Gardens allow you to retreat into nature and be outside anytime you want. There is nothing as wonderful as one to relax in, something you can keep in mind when you are working to get it set up. Investing in a breathtaking garden is good, as it will increase the “curb appeal” and value of your home. A water feature is not the only way to improve your landscape; consider adding trees and bushes, paving your driveway, or even putting in some special statues.

A water fountain can make a significant difference to the elegance and tranquility of your garden. A true fantasyland can be developed from what used to be a very ordinary spot. The trickling water of your fountain will not only give you a calming retreat, it will also attract wild birds and other friendly local animals. The rest of the garden will immediately become just background to the lovely new fountain.

Original Water Supply Solutions in Rome

Aqua Anio Vetus, the first raised aqueduct built in Rome, commenced delivering the people living in the hills with water in 273 BC, though they had depended on natural springs up till then. Outside of these aqueducts and springs, wells and rainwater-collecting cisterns were the sole technological innovations readily available at the time to supply water to spots of greater elevation. To deliver water to Pincian Hill in the early 16th century, they utilized the brand-new tactic of redirecting the circulation from the Acqua Vergine aqueduct’s underground network. During its initial construction, pozzi (or manholes) were situated at set intervals along the aqueduct’s channel.

Although they were originally planned to make it possible to support the aqueduct, Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi started using the manholes to get water from the channel, starting when he purchased the property in 1543. Apparently, the rainwater cistern on his property wasn’t enough to fulfill his needs. That is when he made a decision to create an access point to the aqueduct that ran directly below his property.

Consider Buying a Stand-Alone Water Element for Your Yard

People love contained fountains for their simple installation and low price. The plumbing, pump, and other components come included with the fountain. Fountains that have their own water supply are also known as “self-contained”.

If you are looking for an easy-to-install water fountain for a veranda or porch, a self-contained model is definitely for you. Their mobility is also an advantage, as they are very easy to move around.

The landscaper will first inspect that the place where you want your fountain to go is flat. Lawns and gardens tend to be lumpy so your landscaper will have to even out the spot where you want to put it. The moment has come to put your water feature where you want it and fill it with water. It is now time to plug it in using either an electrical outlet, a solar panel, or batteries.

If you need a fountain that will not need an outside water source or additional plumbing, a self-contained fountain is ideal. Many people put them in the middle of the garden, but they can really go anywhere. A variety of common materials can be used for fountains including cast stone, metal, ceramic, and fiberglass.

An Absolute Roman Marvel: The Santa Maria Water Feature in Cosmedin

Both Christian and pagan artifacts have been found in large quantities by archaeologists and restorers scouring the area of the Santa Maria in Cosmedin in Rome. The nearby basilica is mainly famous for the marble sculpture known as the Bocca della Verità, (Mouth of Truth) located in its entryway. Due to the fact that the Santa Maria in Cosmedin fountain (1719) was located off the beaten track, it remained mostly obscure.

It was said that there was nothing worth seeing in this area because it was abject and abandoned making it an unfriendly place to visit. It was then that the Italian architect Carlo Bizzaccheri was mandated by Pope Clement XI to build a water fountain in the square outside the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin in an attempt to make the area more popular. The task of laying down the church’s first stones began on August 17, 1717. Medallions bearing the imagery of the Blessed Virgin, for whom the church is named, and of St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of water”, were thrown in the foundation following the blessing of the first stone.

Improve Your Garden with the Help of Feng Shui

Incorporating feng shui design into your yard will help circulate its energy into your home and your life.

As far as the size of your yard goes, it is not extremely important when adding feng shui design to it. It is fabulous to have a huge space to work with, but do not worry if the area is small since you can always incorporate feng shui design.

The primary feng shui tools can be used for your interior decor as well as your garden design. Your yard's bagua, or energy map, is an off-shoot of your house's bagua, so it is essential to figure out your home’s first.

It is also important to know the five elements in the theory of feng shui and how best to use each one to optimize its energy.

An example of this is that Earth is the feng shui element you should include in the northeast section of your garden because that part of your garden connects to the energy of personal growth and self-cultivation. The ideal addition to the northeast corner of your yard might be a serene Zen garden decorated with natural stone, as they represent the Earth element in feng shui.

Anyone thinking about adding a water feature into their garden should place it in one of these feng shui areas: North (career & path in life), Southeast (money and abundance), or East (health & family).
