The History of Water Fountains

As the head of the Catholic Church, the scholarly Pope Nicholas V (1397-1455} decided to authorize translations of important texts from their original Greek into Latin. Turning the city into the deserving capital of the Christian community was important to him, so he also took steps to embellish it. Beginning in 1453, the ruined Aqua Vergine, an historical Roman aqueduct which had brought clean drinking water into the city from many miles away, underwent restoration at the bidding of the Pope. In addition, the ancient Roman tradition of marking the arrival point of an aqueduct with an grandiose celebratory fountain, also known as a mostra, was restored by Nicholas V. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was instructed by him to put up a wall fountain where we now find the breath-taking Trevi Fountain. 53265ct__51863.jpg The Trevi Fountain as well as the renowned baroque fountains found in the Piazza Navona and the Piazza del Popolo were eventually supplied with water from the altered, rebuilt aqueduct.

Disappearing Water Fountains: Some of the Advantages of Having one in your Garden

There are two names for this kind of fountain: “disappearing” and “pondless”. You do not see where the water comes from, because it is underground. Disappearing fountains should be positioned near any place people hang out frequently, as they add so much to the surrounding area. They are available in a range of unique styles including waterfalls, columns made of granite, ceramic pots, and millstones.

A disappearing fountain could be the best choice for you for many reasons. There is no large pool of water that could pose a risk to anyone since the water comes from beneath the ground. That said, you will not have to be anxious about the well-being of your children. Evaporating water is also not an issue because the water source is not out in the open. As a result, your fountain will not waste as much water as other styles of fountains. This type of fountain is recommended if you do not have a lot of time to clean it often since neither debris nor algae can get to it underground. Finally, you can install one just about anywhere given that it takes up so little room.

Anglo-Saxon Gardens During the Norman Conquest

The advent of the Normans in the second half of the eleventh century greatly transformed The Anglo-Saxon ways of living. The expertise of the Normans exceeded the Anglo-Saxons' in design and farming at the time of the conquest. But the Normans had to pacify the entire territory before they could focus on home life, domestic architecture, and decoration. Because of this, castles were cruder constructions than monasteries: Monasteries were often important stone buildings set in the biggest and most fecund valleys, while castles were constructed on windy crests where their residents dedicated time and space to projects for offense and defense. The serene method of gardening was not viable in these dismal bastions.

The early Anglo-Norman style of architecture is exemplified in Berkeley Castle, which is most likely the most unscathed sample we have. The keep is said to date from the time of William the Conqueror. A massive terrace serves as a hindrance to invaders who would attempt to mine the walls of the building. On 1 of these terraces lies a stylish bowling green: it is covered in grass and flanked by an old yew hedge that is formed into the shape of rough ramparts.

Select from Countless Outdoor Wall Fountain Styles

Small patios or courtyards are an ideal place to set up wall fountains because they add style to an area with limited space. Conventional, antique, contemporary, or Asian are just a few of the designs you can choose from when looking for an outdoor wall fountain to your liking. Your tastes dictate the type you buy so while there may not be a prefabricated fountain to suit you, you do have the option of having a customized one.

There are two distinct styles of fountains you can buy: mounted and free-standing. Small, self-contained models can be placed on a wall are known as mounted wall fountains. One of the most important features of wall fountains is that they be lightweight, so they are normally made of fiberglass or resin to replicate the look of stone. Stand-alone fountains, often referred to as floor fountains, are of considerable size, have a basin located on the ground and a smooth side which leans against a wall. There are no weight constraints on these sorts of cast stone water features.

Many qualified landscapers prefer custom-built fountains which can be incorporated into a brand-new wall or an existing one. The basin and all the required plumbing are best installed by a trained mason. A fountain mask or a spout also needs to be integrated into the wall. If you want a cohesive look for your garden, buy a customized wall fountain because it becomes part of the scenery rather than an afterthought.

Acqua Vergine: The Solution to Rome's Water Problems

Prior to 273, when the first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in Roma, inhabitants who dwelled on hills had to journey even further down to get their water from natural sources. Outside of these aqueducts and springs, wells and rainwater-collecting cisterns were the lone technologies available at the time to supply water to areas of high elevation. In the early 16th century, the city began to make use of the water that ran below the ground through Acqua Vergine to supply water to Pincian Hill.

As originally constructed, the aqueduct was provided along the length of its channel with pozzi (manholes) constructed at regular intervals. Though they were initially developed to make it possible to service the aqueduct, Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi started using the manholes to accumulate water from the channel, commencing when he bought the property in 1543. He didn’t get an adequate amount water from the cistern that he had established on his property to collect rainwater. That is when he made a decision to create an access point to the aqueduct that ran under his property.

The One Cleaning Solution to NEVER Use On Your Large Garden Fountains

Water fountains will last a very long time with routine cleaning and maintenance. A typical issue with fountains is that they tend to gather dirt and debris, so it is essential that you keep it free from this. On top of that, algae can be a concern, because sunshine hitting the water enables it to form easily. Either sea salt, hydrogen peroxide, or vinegar can be mixed into the water to prevent this issue. Bleach can also be mixed into the water, but this is not an ideal option as it can harm birds or other animals.

Experts advise that the typical garden fountain undergoes a thorough cleaning every three-four months. The initial task is to empty out all of the water. Then use gentle and a soft sponge to clean inside the reservoir. If there is delicate artwork, you might need to use a toothbrush for those hard-to-reach areas. Make sure all the soap is properly washed off.

Some organisms and calcium deposits may get inside the pump, so it is best to take it apart and clean it completely. You might want to let it soak in vinegar for a few hours to make it quicker to wash. If you want to minimize build-up in your fountain, use rain water or mineral water versus tap water, as these don’t contain any elements that will stick to the inside of the pump.

And finally, make sure the water level is consistently full in order to keep your fountain working smoothly. If the water level falls below the pump’s intake level, it can damage the pump and cause it to burn out - something you don't want to happen!
