Guidelines for Installing an Outdoor Fountain

b-026__96292.jpg Two things many people ignore when planning the installation of a garden fountain is a suitable water source and an electrical outlet close by. People sometimes fail to remember the technical details because they get caught up in the excitement of setting up their newest purchase. Since standard power cords are only 12 feet in length, you might need to add an extension cord to reach the closest 120v outlet. You will need to fill your fountain with water so make sure there is a source of water in the area. Carrying large amounts of water requires strength so you do not want to have to lug it a long distance. If you have thought about it before installation, having a hose close by will make the job of filling the fountain much simpler. A water fountain autofill will make your life less complicated in the long run, but this requires a trained expert to install since it must be connected to an external water line.

Ways to Introduce the Benefits of Feng Shui to Your Backyard

Experience the health benefits of feng shui by adding its design elements into your yard.

When introducing feng shui design into your yard, even a very small space is adequate. A sizeable area is great for those fortunate enough to have it, but a smaller area can still be useful in feng shui design.

The same tools you employ to introduce feng shui design into your living space can be used in the garden. Since the energy map, or bagua, of your garden is an extension of your home's bagua, you will need to begin by understanding the bagua of the house.

Before getting going, make sure you grasp the five elements of feng shui so that you can optimize their energy.

An example of this is that Earth is the feng shui element you should include in the northeast part of your garden because that part of your garden connects to the energy of personal growth and self-cultivation. A Zen garden with some pretty natural rocks is ideal for that spot, as the rocks represent the Earth element.

Anyone thinking about adding a water feature into their garden should place it in one of these feng shui areas: North (career & path in life), Southeast (money and abundance), or East (health & family).

Modern Garden Decor: Large Outdoor Water Fountains and their Beginnings

The incredible architecture of a fountain allows it to provide clean water or shoot water high into air for dramatic effect and it can also serve as an excellent design feature to complete your home.

From the beginning, outdoor fountains were soley meant to serve as functional elements. Inhabitants of cities, townships and small towns utilized them as a source of drinking water and a place to wash, which meant that fountains needed to be connected to nearby aqueduct or spring. Used until the nineteenth century, in order for fountains to flow or shoot up into the air, their source of water such as reservoirs or aqueducts, had to be higher than the water fountain in order to benefit from gravity. Fountains were not only used as a water source for drinking water, but also to adorn homes and celebrate the artist who created it. Animals or heroes made of bronze or stone masks were often utilized by Romans to beautify their fountains. During the Middle Ages, Muslim and Moorish garden planners incorporated fountains to create mini depictions of the gardens of paradise. King Louis XIV of France wanted to illustrate his dominion over nature by including fountains in the Gardens of Versailles. To mark the entrance of the restored Roman aqueducts, the Popes of the 17th and 18th centuries commissioned the construction of baroque style fountains in the spot where the aqueducts entered the city of Rome

Since indoor plumbing became the norm of the day for fresh, drinking water, by the end of the 19th century urban fountains were no longer needed for this purpose and they became purely decorative. Gravity was replaced by mechanical pumps in order to permit fountains to bring in clean water and allow for beautiful water displays.

Modern-day fountains serve mostly as decoration for public spaces, to honor individuals or events, and compliment entertainment and recreational activities.

Santa Maria in Cosmedin: A Roman Water Display Worthy of Experiencing

Remarkable finds of both Christian and pagan origin have been made by archaeologists and restorers in the area of Santa Maria in Cosmedin in Rome. Located in the portico of the nearby basilica one can find the celebrated marble sculpture known as the Bocca della Verità (Mouth of Truth). Built in 1719, the Santa Maria in Cosmedin water fountain was relatively unknown and located far from sight making it hard to visit. Since the nearby area was depressing and mostly abandoned, visitors were not particularly interested in visiting it. As part of a project to revitalize the square outside the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, the Italian architect Carlo Bizzaccheri was instructed by Pope Clement XI to take on the job. Work on the church's infrastructure began on on August 11, 1717. After blessing of the first stone, medals with the images of the Blessed Virgin, for whom the church is named, and of St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of water, were tossed into the foundation.

The Impact of the Norman Invasion on Anglo-Saxon Gardens

The introduction of the Normans in the 2nd half of the 11th century irreparably improved The Anglo-Saxon lifestyle. The ability of the Normans surpassed the Anglo-Saxons' in design and farming at the time of the conquest. But home life, household architecture, and decoration were out of the question until the Normans taken over the general population. Most often designed upon windy peaks, castles were straightforward constructs that allowed their occupants to spend time and space to offensive and defensive programs, while monasteries were rambling stone buildings commonly placed in only the most fecund, broad valleys.

The sterile fortresses did not provide for the calm avocation of farming. The early Anglo-Norman style of architecture is represented in Berkeley Castle, which is most likely the most unscathed illustration we have. The keep is said to date from the time of William the Conqueror. A big terrace recommended for strolling and as a way to stop enemies from mining under the walls runs about the building. A picturesque bowling green, covered in grass and enclosed by battlements clipped out of an ancient yew hedge, forms one of the terraces.

The One Cleaning Solution to NEVER Use On Your Garden Wall Fountains

Water fountains will keep working a long time with regular cleaning and maintenance. It is easy for foreign objects to find their way into open-air fountains, so keeping it clean is essential. Another factor is that water that is exposed to sunlight is prone to growing algae. To stay clear of this, there are some simple ingredients that can be poured into the water, such as vinegar, sea salt, or hydrogen peroxide. There are those who prefer to use bleach, but that is hazardous to any animals that might drink or bathe in the water - so should therefore be avoided.

Every three-four months, garden fountains should go through a decent cleaning. The first step is to empty out all of the water. Next use mild soap and a soft sponge to clean inside the reservoir. Feel free to use a toothbrush if needed for any stubborn crevasses. Be sure to completely rinse the interior of the fountain to make sure all the soap is gone.

Some organisms and calcium deposits can get inside the pump, so it is best to take it apart and clean it thoroughly. To make it less strenuous, soak it in vinegar for several hours before cleaning. Neither rain water nor mineral water contain components that will collect inside the pump, so use either over tap water if possible.

Finally, be sure to have a quick look at your fountain daily and add water if you see that the level is too low.

If the water level drops below the pump’s intake level, it can damage the pump and cause it to burn out - something you don't want to happen!
