A Smaller Garden Space? Don't Feel Left Out! You Can Still Have a Water Feature

Since water is reflective, it has the effect of making a smaller space appear larger than it is. su2063_1__69436.jpg In order to achieve the optimum reflective properties of a water element or fountain, it is best to use dark materials. Night time is a great time to draw attention to the illuminated, colored underwater lights in your new water feature. Solar powered eco-lights are excellent during the day and submerged lights are perfect for nighttime use. Natural therapies use them because they emanate a soothing effect which helps to relieve stress as well as anxiety.

The foliage in your yard is a great spot to fit in your water feature. People will be focused on the pond, artificial river or fountain in your garden. Small verandas or major gardens is the perfect place to install a water feature. Considerably modifying the ambience is possible by placing it in the most appropriate place and include the finest accompaniments.

Keep Your Garden Water fountain Clean

Water fountains will last a very long time with scheduled cleaning and maintenance. It is easy for foreign objects to find their way into open-air fountains, so keeping it clean is important. On top of that, algae can be a problem, because sunshine hitting the water enables it to form quickly. Stir hydrogen peroxide, sea salt, or vinegar into the water to avoid this particular problem. Another option is to stir bleach into the water, but this action can sicken wild animals and so should really be avoided.

No more than 3-4 months should go by without an extensive cleansing of a fountain. Before you can start washing it you should empty out all of the water. Next use gentle and a soft sponge to clean inside the reservoir. A helpful tip is to use a toothbrush if there are tiny hard-to-reach spots. Do not leave any soap deposits inside of or on the fountain.

Make sure you get rid of any calcium or plankton by taking the pump apart and washing the inside carefully. Letting it soak in vinegar for a few hours first will make it much easier to clean. If you want to minimize build-up in your fountain, use rain water or mineral water rather than tap water, as these don’t contain any ingredients that will stick to the inside of the pump.

And finally, make sure the water level is consistently full in order to keep your fountain working smoothly. Low water levels can ruin the pump - and you don't want that!

The Outcome of the Norman Conquest on Anglo-Saxon Gardens

Anglo-Saxons experienced incredible changes to their day-to-day lives in the latter half of the eleventh century due to the accession of the Normans. The Normans were better than the Anglo-Saxons at architecture and horticulture when they came into power. But yet there was no time for home life, domestic architecture, and decoration until the Normans had conquered the whole realm. Castles were more fundamental constructions and often erected on blustery hills, where their tenants devoted both time and space to practicing offense and defense, while monasteries were major stone buildings, mostly located in the widest, most fertile hollows. Gardening, a quiet occupation, was unfeasible in these fruitless fortifications. The early Anglo-Norman style of architecture is portrayed in Berkeley Castle, which is most likely the most unscathed illustration we have. The keep is said to date from the time of William the Conqueror. A large terrace recommended for strolling and as a means to stop enemies from mining below the walls runs about the building.

A picturesque bowling green, covered in grass and bordered by battlements cut out of an ancient yew hedge, forms one of the terraces.

A Back Story of Outdoor Fountains

The Roman academic Pope Nicholas V (1397-1455) decided to have hundreds of old Greek writings translated into Latin. Turning the city into the worthy capital of the Christian world was important to him, so he also took steps to enhance it. In 1453 he initiated the repairing of the Aqua Vergine, an ancient Roman aqueduct which had carried clear drinking water into the city from many miles away. Nicholas V also embarked on the building of mostras, an old Roman tradition of putting up grand public fountains to indicate the terminal point of an aqueduct. At his bidding, the architect Leon Battista Alberti undertook the construction of a wall fountain in the spot where the magnificent Trevi Fountain now stands. The changes, as well as the extensions included in the repaired aqueduct, eventually made it possible to supply the Trevi Fountain and the well-known baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona with the necessary water to function.

Outdoor Fountains: Installation Recommendations

A lot of people forget the need for an electrical socket or water source close by when considering where to put their garden fountain. Sometimes new owners get so caught up in the thrill of their new purchase that they forget critical details. The majority of power cords are 12 feet long and need a 120v outdoor electrical outlet, though an extension cord can always be added. You will also need to have a water resource close by so that you can easily fill your water fountain. It is tough to move water from one place to another. The simplest way to fill the fountain is with a nearby garden hose. A water fountain autofill is yet another option, but will call for the help of someone who knows how to set it up since the water has to go through an external line.

Santa Maria in Cosmedin: A Roman Water Display Worthy of Experiencing

Archaeologists and restorers on the lookout for pagan and Christian antiquities in Rome have come across a wealth of them in the area of the Santa Maria in Cosmedin. The nearby basilica is mainly renowned for the marble sculpture known as the Bocca della Verità, (Mouth of Truth) located in its portico. Built in 1719, the Santa Maria in Cosmedin water fountain was relatively unknown and located far from sight making it hard to visit. For the most part, visitors stayed away from the area because it was a drab and neglected part of the city. It was a this time that Pope Clement XI commissioned the Italian architect Carlo Bizzaccheri to put up a water feature to renovate the square outside the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin. August 11, 1717 saw the start of the task to lay down the foundation of the church. The first stone to be placed in the foundation was blessed and medals bearing the illustrations of the Blessed Virgin, for whom the church is named, and St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of water, were also thrown in.
