How a Water Feature Can Make Your World Better

You might be surprised to learn of all the benefits of being around an indoor or outdoor garden fountain. Water makes up a large portion of our body constitution, and populations world-wide tend to gravitate towards coastal areas. While you could invest in an extravagant beach house or jump in the ocean every day to enjoy the benefits of water, getting a water feature is much easier and more affordable!

Your patio, porch, or back yard can be upgraded by getting an outdoor garden fountain. You might be surprised how your beautiful outdoor space can be even more attractive with one of the many outdoor water elements on the market. A wonderful idea is to set up one on the wall of your screened porch, or perhaps outside as part of your outdoor decor. Turn your flower garden into an oasis of peace by adding a pretty tiered model. Due to the nonstop movement of water in a birdbath fountain, algae and bacteria do not build up, and birds come flocking to the pure water. Add the ultimate touch with the enticing sound of moving water in your garden.

Keeping Your Outdoor Fountain Clean

Adequate care and regular maintenance are important to the longevity of water fountains. It is essential to clean it out and take out any debris or foreign objects that might have dropped into or onto it. On top of that, algae can be a problem, as sun hitting the water allows it to form easily. Either sea salt, hydrogen peroxide, or vinegar can be mixed into the water to avoid this problem. There are those who choose to use bleach, but that is harmful to any animals that might drink or bathe in the water - so should therefore be avoided.

Experts suggest that the typical garden fountain undergoes a thorough scrubbing every 3-4 months. The initial step is to get rid of all of the water. Then use a soft towel and mild cleanser to scrub the inside. If there is intricate artwork, you might need to use a toothbrush for those hard-to-reach areas. Any soap residue remaining on your fountain can damage it, so be sure it is all rinsed off.

Make sure you get rid of any calcium or plankton by taking the pump apart and cleaning the inside thoroughly. Letting it soak in vinegar for a couple of hours first will make it much easier to clean. Neither rain water nor mineral water contain substances that will accumulate inside the pump, so use either over tap water if possible.

One final trick for keeping your fountain in top working condition is to check the water level every day and make sure it is full. If the water level falls below the pump’s intake level, it can harm the pump and cause it to burn out - something you do not want to happen!

The Broad Array of Wall Water Fountains

You can find tranquility and quiet when you add a wall fountain in your backyard or patio. You can also make the most of a small space by having one custom-built. Both the stand alone and mounted models must have a spout, a water basin, internal tubing, and a pump. You have many styles to a lot to pick from whether you are looking for a traditional, modern, classical, or Asian style.

With its basin laid on the ground, freestanding wall fountains, or floor fountains, are typically quite large in size.

A stand-alone water feature can either be integrated onto a wall already in existence or built into a wall under construction. The look of your landscape will seem more unified instead of disjointed when you put in this kind of water feature.

Water Delivery Solutions in Historic Rome

Prior to 273, when the first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was made in Rome, residents who lived on hills had to go even further down to collect their water from natural sources. Over this period, there were only 2 other techniques capable of supplying water to elevated areas, subterranean wells and cisterns, which amassed rainwater. To deliver water to Pincian Hill in the early sixteenth century, they applied the emerging strategy of redirecting the movement from the Acqua Vergine aqueduct’s underground network. As originally constructed, the aqueduct was provided along the length of its channel with pozzi (manholes) constructed at regular intervals. The manholes made it easier to clean the channel, but it was also achievable to use buckets to pull water from the aqueduct, as we saw with Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi when he operated the property from 1543 to 1552, the year he died. Reportedly, the rainwater cistern on his property wasn’t sufficient to fulfill his needs. To give himself with a much more efficient system to gather water, he had one of the manholes opened up, offering him access to the aqueduct below his property.

A Peek into the Beginnings of Outdoor Fountains

During his reign (1397-1455) of the Roman Catholic Church, the erudite Pope Nicholas V directed countless of translations of ancient Greek classics into Latin. Turning the city into the worthy capital of the Christian world was important to him, so he also took steps to enhance it. Starting in 1453, the ruined Aqua Vergine, an historical Roman aqueduct which had brought clean drinking water into the city from many miles away, underwent repair at the behest of the Pope. The mostra, a monumental dedicatory fountain built by ancient Romans to mark the point of arrival of an aqueduct, was a practice also revived by Nicholas V.

At his bidding, the architect Leon Battista Alberti began the building of a wall fountain in the spot where the magnificent Trevi Fountain now stands. The aqueduct he had refurbished included modifications and extensions which eventually allowed it to supply the necessary water to the Trevi Fountain as well as the famed baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona.

A Small Garden Space? Don't Fret! You Can Still Have a Water Feature

Since water is reflective, it has the effect of making a small space appear larger than it is. Dark materials alter the reflective properties of a fountain or water feature. Use underwater lights, which come in many different forms and colors, to show off your new feature at night. Solar powered eco-lights are excellent during the day and underwater lights are perfect for nighttime use. Natural therapies use them because they emanate a soothing effect which helps to relieve stress as well as anxiety.
