A True Roman Masterpiece: The Santa Maria Waterwork in Cosmedin

win634__96952.jpg Incredible discoveries of both Christian and pagan origin have been made by archaeologists and restorers in the area around Santa Maria in Cosmedin in Rome. The celebrated marble sculpture called the Bocca della Verità (Mouth of Truth) can be seen in the portico of the basilica nearby. When the Santa Maria in Cosmedin water fountain was created in 1719, it was off the beaten track and mostly unknown as a result. For the most part, visitors stayed away from the area because it was a bleak and desolate part of the city. As part of a project to refurbish the square outside the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, the Italian architect Carlo Bizzaccheri was instructed by Pope Clement XI to take on the job. Work on the church's foundation began on on August 11, 1717. The first stone to be placed in the foundation was consecrated and medallions bearing the illustrations of the Blessed Virgin, for whom the church is named, and St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of water, were also thrown in.

A Smaller Garden Space? Don't Fret! You Can Still Have a Water Feature

Since water is reflective, it has the effect of making a smaller spot appear larger than it is. In order to achieve the optimum reflective properties of a water element or fountain, it is best to use dark materials. Night time is a great occasion to draw attention to the lighted, colored underwater lights in your new water feature. Solar powered eco-lights are great during the day and submerged lights are perfect for nighttime use. The comforting effect produced by these is oftentimes used in nature therapies to alleviate anxiety and stress.

The vegetation in your yard is a very good spot to fit in your water feature. People will be centered on the pond, artificial river or fountain in your garden. Small verandas or major gardens is the perfect place to install a water feature. The right accessories and the best location for it are important if you want to enhance the atmosphere.

Water Elements: Important in any Japanese Gardens

No Japanese garden is complete without a water feature. They tend to be placed right at the entrance of Japanese temples and homes because they are thought to be representative of spiritual and physical cleansing. Since water is meant to be the focal point of a fountain, you will notice that the designs are kept very simple.

You will also find many fountains that have spouts built of bamboo. The bamboo spout is placed over the basin, typically made of natural stones, and water trickles out. People generally make them look weathered and worn, even when they are new. It is essential that the overall look of the fountain goes with the natural setting, so people typically place plants, rocks, and flowers around it. As you can perhaps surmise, this fountain is symbolic rather than purely decorative.

If you want to get a bit more imaginative, try a stone fountain enhanced with live bamboo and other natural elements placed on a bed of gravel. Before long moss begins to creep over the stones and cover them, and as that happens the area begins to look more and more like a natural part of the landscape.

If you are blessed enough to have a big section of open land you can create a water feature that is much more elaborate. Lots of people add a koi pond or a small stream as a final touch.

However, water does not have to be an actual element in a Japanese water fountain. It is acceptable to use representations of water in lieu of real water, such as sand, rocks, or natural stones. In addition, flat stones can be laid out close enough together to create the illusion of a rippling brook.

Factors to Think About When Setting up an Outdoor Water Fountain

A water source and an electrical socket are two important items that many people do not take into account when determining where they want to put in their garden fountain. Sometimes new owners get so caught up in the romanticism of their new purchase that they forget important details. Do not forget that an extension cord can be handy if your 120v power source is more than 12 feet away, as that is the standard length of power cords. A convenient place to get water is essential since you will need to fill your fountain. It is difficult to move water from one place to another.

A nearby hose can make filling the fountain a lot more convenient. A water fountain autofill is yet another alternative, but will require the help of an expert who knows how to set it up since the water has to go through an external line.

Acqua Vergine: The Solution to Rome's Water Challenges

Prior to 273, when the very first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was made in Rome, inhabitants who resided on hills had to journey further down to gather their water from natural sources. During this time period, there were only 2 other technologies capable of delivering water to higher areas, subterranean wells and cisterns, which amassed rainwater. Starting in the sixteenth century, a unique approach was introduced, using Acqua Vergine’s subterranean sections to provide water to Pincian Hill. As originally constructed, the aqueduct was provided along the length of its channel with pozzi (manholes) constructed at regular intervals. Even though they were originally planned to make it possible to support the aqueduct, Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi started out using the manholes to gather water from the channel, opening when he obtained the property in 1543. He didn’t get a sufficient quantity of water from the cistern that he had manufactured on his residential property to obtain rainwater. That is when he made a decision to create an access point to the aqueduct that ran beneath his property.

Multi-level Fountains for your Garden

For many years now now, multi-tiered fountains have been common, particularly in gardens. The countries in the southern part of Europe tend to have a lot of these types of fountains. Public squares and building courtyards are very popular places where you will see tiered fountains. While some tiered fountains have sophisticated designs including sculptures or artwork, others are very simple.

Any area can be enhanced with one, even though a more traditional setting is sometimes more appropriate. The fountain should look as old as the rest of the area and fit in accordingly.
